[DL75] Hands-On Crafting: Enhancing Prototypes

Session 5: “Hands-On Crafting: Enhancing Prototypes”

Architect:
Syed Shayaan Haider - Markhor3D

Session Overview

In this session, Grade 7 students will blend digital fabrication with hands-on craftsmanship. Using crafting materials like cardboard, foam, and glue guns (introduced in the previous session), they will enhance and modify their 3D printed prototypes. This activity not only reinforces the design concepts learned so far but also encourages creative problem-solving by allowing students to physically adjust and improve their models.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, students will be able to:

  • Enhance Prototypes Physically: Use crafting materials to modify and improve their 3D printed models.
  • Apply Creative Problem-Solving: Identify areas in their prototypes that can benefit from hands-on modifications.
  • Integrate Digital and Physical Design: Understand how digital designs can be enhanced with manual adjustments for better functionality and aesthetics.
  • Document Improvements: Record changes and reflect on how these modifications improve the overall design.

Required Equipment:

  • Crafting Materials:
    • Cardboard sheets
    • Foam pieces
    • Glue guns with glue sticks
    • Scissors and craft knives
    • Rulers and markers for measuring and marking
  • 3D Printed Prototypes:
    • Each student’s or group’s printed model from previous sessions
  • Computers or Tablets:
    • For referencing digital designs if needed
  • Interactive Whiteboard or Projector:
    • For demonstrating crafting techniques
  • Notebooks and Pens:
    • For recording observations and modifications
  • Assistants or Volunteers:
    • To help with safe handling of crafting tools and materials

Structure and Lesson Plan (Total Time: 60 minutes)

1. Introduction and Recap (10 minutes)

  • Welcome:
    • “Good morning, everyone! Today, we’re going to take your prototypes to the next level by enhancing them with crafting materials.”
  • Recap:
    • “Let’s quickly review your 3D printed prototypes. What did you like about them, and what could be improved?”
  • Session Overview:
    • “We’ll use materials like cardboard and foam along with glue guns to add details, reinforce structures, and solve any design issues you’ve identified. This will help you understand how digital and physical modifications can work together.”

2. Demonstration of Crafting Techniques (15 minutes)

  • Teacher Demonstration:
    • Cardboard Modifications:
      • “Watch how I cut cardboard to add a supportive base to a model, reinforcing a weak area.”
    • Foam Enhancements:
      • “I’ll show you how to use foam to add cushioning or decorative elements. Foam can be easily shaped and glued onto your prototype.”
    • Using Glue Guns:
      • “Let’s review the safe use of glue guns. Notice how the glue is applied in thin, even layers to secure materials without excess mess.”
  • Visual Examples:
    • Display images or short video clips demonstrating each technique.

3. Hands-On Crafting Activity (25 minutes)

  • Activity Instructions:
    • “Now, it’s your turn! Work individually or in groups to enhance your 3D printed prototypes. Consider these ideas:”
      • Reinforce weak areas with cardboard supports.
      • Add foam layers for cushioning or to create a better grip.
      • Use glue guns to attach extra details or to fix any loose parts.
  • Teacher Support:
    • Circulate the room to assist with cutting, gluing, and measuring.
    • Encourage creativity while ensuring safety with tools.
  • Objective:
    • “Your goal is to improve the functionality and appearance of your prototype. Think about how your modifications solve any issues or add new features.”

4. Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)

  • Student Presentations:
    • “Let’s have a few groups share their enhanced prototypes. Explain what changes you made and why.”
  • Peer Feedback:
    • Encourage classmates to offer constructive suggestions and positive comments.
  • Teacher Feedback:
    • “Excellent enhancements! Your use of cardboard to reinforce structures is very creative, and I love how the foam adds both style and function.”

5. Conclusion and Next Steps (5 minutes)

  • Session Summary:
    • “Today, you learned how to blend digital design with hands-on craftsmanship to improve your prototypes. You used materials like cardboard and foam, and practiced using glue guns safely.”
  • Preview Next Session:
    • “In our next session, we will further evaluate these enhanced prototypes and discuss how the modifications have improved their functionality and design.”
  • Closing Encouragement:
    • “Great job, everyone! Your creative problem-solving and attention to detail are key to making successful designs. Keep up the fantastic work!”
