Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, Grade 4 students will:

  • Identify Practical Needs: Recognize and brainstorm everyday items that can be enhanced or created using 3D design.
  • Design Functional Objects: Utilize TinkerCad to design objects with practical uses, such as desk organizers, bookmarks with clips, or custom keychains.
  • Apply Advanced Tools: Use alignment, grouping, and other advanced TinkerCad tools to create precise and functional designs.
  • Enhance Creativity and Problem-Solving: Develop creative solutions to everyday problems through design.
  • Prepare for 3D Printing: Ensure designs are optimized for printing by checking dimensions, overhangs, and wall thickness.

1. Introduction and Inspiration (10 minutes)

  • Introduce the Theme:

    • “We’ll focus on creating functional items like desk organizers, bookmarks with clips, and custom keychains. These are things that can help you stay organized and make your daily tasks easier.”
  • Show Visual Aids:

    • Display images of various functional objects created in TinkerCad.

    • “Look at these awesome designs! These objects not only look cool but also serve practical purposes.”

  • Discussion:

    • “Think about the things you use every day. What could be improved or what new item would make your life easier?”

2. Brainstorming Session (15 minutes)

  • Pair Formation:

    • “Pair up with a partner and discuss ideas for a functional object you’d like to design.”
  • Distribute Materials:

    • Hand out paper and pencils to each pair.
  • Guided Brainstorming:

    • Prompts:

      • “What is something you use every day that you wish could be better?”
      • “Is there an object you need but haven’t found the perfect version of?”
      • “How can you solve a problem you face using a functional object?”
    • Sketching Ideas:

      • “Draw a simple sketch of your idea. Think about its purpose and how it will help you.”
  • Teacher and Assistant Support:

    • Circulate the room to assist pairs with brainstorming and sketching.

    • Encourage creativity and practicality in their ideas.

3. Transition to Digital Design (5 minutes)

  • Explain the Next Step:

    • “Now that you have your ideas on paper, it’s time to bring them to life in TinkerCad!”
  • Set Up Devices:

    • Ensure each pair has their device ready with TinkerCad open to a new design workspace.
  • Reminders:

    • “Remember to work together and refer back to your sketches as you design.”

4. Hands-On Designing in TinkerCad (25 minutes)

  • Guidelines and Expectations:

    • “Use the tools and shapes in TinkerCad to start building your functional object. Focus on making it both useful and visually appealing.”
  • Design Techniques:

    • Alignment and Grouping:

      • “Use alignment tools to position your shapes accurately. Group shapes together to form a single object.”
    • Combining Shapes:

      • “Combine different shapes to create the parts of your object. For example, use cylinders for holes or connectors.”
    • Customizing Designs:

      • “Add details to personalize your object. Maybe add your name to a keychain or decorative elements to a desk organizer.”
  • Examples:

    • Desk Organizer:

      • Base: Rectangular box.
      • Compartments: Smaller boxes for holding pens and pencils.
      • Holes: Centered perfectly for cables.
    • Bookmark with Clip:

      • Base: Thin rectangular shape.
      • Clip: Small cylinder or hook shape attached precisely to one end.
    • Custom Keychain:

      • Base: Small shape (circle, heart, etc.).
      • Attachment: Hole centered perfectly for a keyring.
  • Teacher and Assistant Support:

    • Move around the room to provide individual assistance.

    • Help students troubleshoot alignment issues and grouping mistakes.

    • Encourage students to think about the functionality and aesthetics of their designs.

  • Encourage Creativity:

    • “Feel free to experiment with different shapes and designs. Your object should be something that you find useful and cool!”
  • Reminders:

    • “Save your work frequently.”

    • “Check your design for any overhangs or areas that might need supports if printed.”

5. Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)
