Session 7: “Adding Details: Fillets and Chamfers”
Architect:
Syed Shayaan Haider - Markhor3D
Session Overview
In this session, Grade 6 students will learn how to refine their 3D models by adding fillets and chamfers to edges. After extruding or revolving their sketches into 3D objects, students will use these tools in OnShape to round off or bevel the edges of their designs. Fillets help to smooth sharp corners, reducing stress points and improving durability, while chamfers create beveled edges that give the model a cleaner, finished look. This session will enhance the aesthetics and functionality of their designs.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the session, students will be able to:
- Understand Fillets and Chamfers: Explain that fillets are rounded edges and chamfers are beveled edges.
- Apply Fillets: Use the fillet tool in OnShape to round sharp corners in their 3D models.
- Apply Chamfers: Use the chamfer tool in OnShape to create beveled edges for a clean finish.
- Improve Model Durability and Appearance: Recognize how these details can reduce stress and give their models a more professional look.
- Refine Existing Models: Enhance their extruded or revolved models with added details for better functionality and aesthetics.

Structure and Lesson Plan (Total Time: 60 minutes)
1. Introduction and Recap (10 minutes)
- Welcome and Context:
“Good morning, Grade 6! Today, we’re going to add finishing touches to your 3D models using fillets and chamfers.” - Recap Previous Steps:
“In our last sessions, you turned your 2D sketches into 3D objects through extrusion or revolve. Now, we will refine those models by smoothing and beveling the edges.” - Explain the Importance:
“Adding fillets and chamfers not only makes your models look more polished, but also helps reduce stress at the edges, making your designs stronger.”
2. Explanation of Fillets and Chamfers (15 minutes)
- What are Fillets?
“Fillets are rounded edges. They soften sharp corners, which can help prevent cracks and add a smooth finish to your model.” - What are Chamfers?
“Chamfers are beveled edges. Instead of a sharp corner, a chamfer cuts off the corner at an angle, giving a neat, finished look.” - How to Create Them in OnShape:
- Fillets: “Select an edge of your model, choose the fillet tool, and set a radius (e.g., 2-3 mm) to round the edge.”
- Chamfers: “Select an edge, choose the chamfer tool, and set a distance to bevel the edge. A simple trick is to use small triangles as guides for a chamfer effect.”

3. Live Demonstration (15 minutes)
- Demonstrate on a Sample Model:
“Let’s open one of your 3D models and apply these tools.”- Fillet Demonstration:
“Select a sharp edge on your model and click on the fillet tool. Adjust the radius until the corner is nicely rounded.” - Chamfer Demonstration:
“Now, select another edge and apply the chamfer tool. Set a distance to create a clean, beveled edge.”
- Fillet Demonstration:
- Discuss the Effects:
“Notice how the fillet smooths the corner, reducing stress, and how the chamfer gives a crisp, professional look.”
4. Hands-On Practice (15 minutes)
- Activity Instructions:
“Now, take your own 3D model and choose at least two edges to refine using fillets and two edges using chamfers. Experiment with different radii and distances to see how it changes the appearance.” - Teacher and Assistant Support:
“Walk around, check your settings, and ask for help if you’re not sure how to adjust the values.”
5. Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)
- Student Sharing:
“Would anyone like to show their refined model and explain which tool they used and why?” - Peer and Teacher Feedback:
“Great job on smoothing those corners! I like how the chamfer adds a neat finish to your model.”
6. Conclusion and Next Steps (5 minutes)
- Summarize the Session:
“Today, you learned how to enhance your 3D models by adding fillets and chamfers. These details make your models both stronger and more attractive.” - Preview Next Session:
“Next time, we will use these refined models as the basis for more advanced 3D modeling techniques and assembly projects.” - Closing Encouragement:
“Excellent work today! Your attention to detail will help you create professional-quality designs in the future.”
Glossary
- Fillet: A rounded edge added to a model to smooth out sharp corners.
- Chamfer: A beveled edge created by cutting off a corner at an angle.
- Extrusion/ Revolve: Methods used in previous sessions to turn 2D sketches into 3D models.
- Closed Sketch: A 2D drawing with all lines connected, ready for extrusion.
- Radius (for Fillets): The distance from the edge of the rounded corner to the original corner.
- Distance (for Chamfers): The amount by which the corner is cut off to create a beveled edge.
