Session 6: “Introduction to Revolve and Other Features”
Architect:
Syed Shayaan Haider - Markhor3D
Session Overview
In this session, Grade 6 students will learn how to turn their 2D sketches into 3D models using the revolve tool in OnShape. The revolve tool works by spinning a 2D shape around a line (called the axis) to create a 3D object. This is a great way to make items like vases, cups, or bowls. Today, you will learn how to set up your sketch for revolving, pick the right axis, and adjust the rotation to get the shape you want.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, students will:
- Understand Revolve: Know that revolving means spinning a 2D shape to make a 3D object.
- Create a Closed Sketch: Make sure your 2D drawing is complete with no gaps.
- Choose an Axis: Learn how to pick the right line to spin your sketch around.
- Set the Rotation Angle: Use the revolve tool to turn your sketch 360° (or another angle) to form a complete object.
- See Your 3D Model: Observe how your simple sketch becomes a vase, cup, or bowl.
Teaching Aids
Visual Aids:
- Placeholder: [Google Image Search “OnShape revolve feature”] – showing the revolve tool in action.
- Placeholder: [Google Image Search “OnShape vase sketch”] – example of a 2D sketch ready for revolving.
Required Equipment:
- Computers or Tablets: One per student or pair, with OnShape open.
- Interactive Whiteboard or Projector: For live demonstrations.
- Notebooks and Pens: For taking notes.
- Assistants or Volunteers: To help with the software and answer questions.
Structure and Lesson Plan (Total Time: 60 minutes)
1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Welcome:
- “Good morning, everyone! Today, we will learn how to make a 3D object by spinning a 2D drawing using the revolve tool in OnShape.”
- Explain What Revolve Is:
- “Revolve means to spin a shape around a line to create a 3D object. Imagine turning a half-drawn vase into a full vase by spinning it all the way around.”
- Show an Example:
- “Here is a simple example: a half-vase sketch that is revolved to make a complete vase.”

2. Setting Up Your Sketch (15 minutes)
- Create a Closed Sketch:
- “Open a new part in OnShape and choose the sketch tool. Draw a simple closed shape like half of a vase or cup. Make sure all the lines connect so the shape is complete.”
- Talk About Basic Shapes:
- “Try using tools like the line, circle, and arc tools. You can also draw an ellipse if you want a different look.”
- Add Dimensions:
- “Set your sketch dimensions carefully. For example, if you are designing half a cup, decide how wide and tall it should be.”
- Hands-On Practice:
- “Take 10 minutes to create your own closed sketch. Experiment with different shapes like rectangles, circles, or ellipses.”
3. Using the Revolve Tool (20 minutes)
- Explain How to Choose an Axis:
- “When you are ready, choose an edge of your sketch as the axis. This is the line that your sketch will spin around.”
- Demonstration:
- “Let me show you how to use the revolve tool: Select your closed sketch, then choose the revolve option. Pick the axis and set the angle to 360° for a full object.”

- Hands-On Practice:
- “Now, use the revolve tool on your sketch. Spin it 360° to see your 3D object take shape. You can adjust the height or angle if needed to get the look you want.”
4. Sharing and Feedback (10 minutes)
- Student Sharing:
- “Who would like to share their 3D model? Explain what you designed and which axis you chose.”
- Peer Feedback:
- “Listen to your classmates and share one thing you like about their design.”
- Teacher Feedback:
- “Great job everyone! I love how your models show that a simple sketch can turn into a cool 3D object.”
5. Conclusion and Next Steps (5 minutes)
- Summarize the Session:
- “Today, you learned how to use the revolve tool to transform your 2D sketches into 3D models like vases or cups. Your closed sketches and careful choice of axis are key to making a good 3D shape.”
- Preview the Next Session:
- “In our next session, we will add more details to these 3D models and learn other advanced features to refine your designs further.”
- Closing Encouragement:
- “Keep practicing your sketching and revolving skills. Your creativity and precision are building a strong foundation for your future designs!”
Glossary
- Revolve: To spin a 2D sketch around an axis to create a 3D object.
