- Computers or Tablets:
- For creating and displaying presentation slides if desired.
- Interactive Whiteboard or Projector:
- For demonstrating postprocessing techniques and showcasing student presentations.
- Printed Models:
- Each student’s completed and postprocessed 3D printed model.
- Notebooks and Pens:
- For taking notes during presentations and feedback sessions.
- Assistants or Volunteers:
- Additional adults to help supervise postprocessing and facilitate presentations.
Structure and Lesson Plan (Total Time: 60 minutes)
1. Introduction and Overview (5 minutes)
- Greet the Students:
- “Good morning, everyone! Today is a special day—we’re going to showcase the amazing projects you’ve been working on and reflect on all the skills you’ve developed.”
- Outline the Session:
- “We’ll start by finishing up your printed models with some postprocessing and assembly. Then, we’ll move on to presenting your projects to the class and sharing feedback.”
2. Postprocessing & Assembly (35 minutes)
A. Postprocessing Steps (15 minutes)
- Explain the Importance:
- “Postprocessing helps make your models look better and function properly. This includes removing any leftover supports, sanding rough edges, and assembling parts if your design requires it.”
- Demonstrate Techniques:
- Removing Supports:
- “Use pliers or tweezers to carefully pull away the supports from your model. Be gentle to avoid breaking any parts.”
- Sanding:
- “Smooth out any rough areas with sandpaper. This makes your model look neat and polished.”
- Cleaning:
- “Use a small brush to remove any leftover filament or debris from your model.”
- Removing Supports:
- Hands-On Activity:
- “Now, take your printed model and start removing the supports. Once that’s done, use sandpaper to smooth out the surfaces. If your model has separate parts, use glue or adhesive to assemble them.”
- Teacher and Assistant Support:
- Circulate the room to assist students with postprocessing tasks.
- Ensure safety by reminding students to handle tools carefully.
B. Assembling Models (20 minutes)
- Explain Assembly Needs:
- “Some of your designs may have multiple parts that need to be put together. Let’s go over how to assemble these parts correctly.”
- Demonstrate Assembly:
- Example: “If you designed a toy car with separate wheels and chassis, apply a small amount of glue to the axle areas and attach the wheels to the chassis. Make sure they align properly for smooth movement.”
- Hands-On Activity:
- “Assemble your models if they have separate parts. Take your time to ensure everything fits together correctly and securely.”
- Teacher and Assistant Support:
- Provide guidance on how to best assemble different types of models.
- Help troubleshoot any fitting issues students might encounter.
3. Feedback and Sharing (25 minutes)
A. Preparing for Presentations (5 minutes)
- Explain Presentation Structure:
- “Each of you will have a few minutes to present your project. You’ll talk about what your design is, why you created it, the challenges you faced, and what you learned during the process.”
- Distribute Feedback Forms:
- “Use these feedback forms to take notes on your classmates’ presentations. Focus on what you liked and any suggestions you might have.”
B. Student Presentations (15 minutes)
- Facilitate Presentations:
- “Let’s start with [Student/Pair Name]. Please come up and share your project with us.”
- Guidelines for Presentations:
- Purpose: Explain what the design is and its intended use.
- Challenges: Discuss any difficulties encountered and how they were overcome.
- Learnings: Share what they learned about 3D modeling and printing.
- Encourage Engagement:
- “Listen carefully and think about questions or positive comments you can share.”
- Provide Positive Feedback:
- “Great job on your pinwheel! I love how it spins so smoothly after your careful adjustments.”
C. Peer Feedback (5 minutes)
- Collect Feedback Forms:
- “Please hand in your feedback forms once all presentations are complete.”
- Facilitate a Brief Discussion:
- “What did you enjoy about your classmates’ projects? Did anyone face similar challenges?”
- Encourage Constructive Feedback:
- “Remember, feedback is about helping each other improve. Think about what worked well and what could be even better.”
4. Reflection (5 minutes)
- Guided Reflection Activity:
- “Take a moment to think about how your 3D modeling and printing skills have grown. What was something new you learned? How can you use these skills in future projects?”
- Share Reflections:
- “Would anyone like to share their thoughts on their learning journey?”
- Encourage Future Applications:
- “Think about other things you might want to design or how you can apply these skills in different subjects or hobbies.”
Glossary
- Postprocessing: Steps taken after printing to improve the appearance and functionality of a 3D printed model, such as removing supports and sanding.
- Clearance: The small gap between moving parts in a model to ensure they can move freely without sticking together.
- Assembly: The process of putting together separate parts of a model to form a complete object.
- Feedback: Constructive comments and suggestions aimed at helping someone improve their work.
- Sanding: Using sandpaper or sanding tools to smooth out rough surfaces on a printed model.
- Glue/Adhesive: Substance used to bond separate parts of a model together securely.
- Moving Assemblies: Groups of parts in a model that can move relative to each other, such as hinges, wheels, and gears.
- Pivot Point: The fixed point around which a part rotates or moves.
- Rotational Motion: Movement in which an object rotates around an axis or pivot point.
