Grade 2 – Session 5: “Jump High Challenge”

Session Overview:
In this fun, active session, students will learn to measure and compare their jump heights using MeasureLab’s distance sensor, which records results in centimeters. Through hands-on exploration, students will discover how high they can jump, gaining an introduction to measurement units and understanding how centimeters are used to describe height. As they compete and compare their jumps with classmates, students will develop skills in observation, recording, and comparing data, making real-world connections to measurement in a lively and engaging way.
Learning Objectives:
In this session, students will:
- Measure how high they can jump using the distance sensor on MeasureLab, recorded in centimeters.
- Understand what a centimeter is and how it is used to measure jump heights.
- Compare their jump heights with classmates, recording the results in a simple worksheet.
- Develop an understanding of measurement and comparison.
Teacher Resource:
Equipment Required:
- MeasureLab with built-in distance sensor.
- Laptop or PC to display jump height in centimeters.
- Ruler or measuring tape to show centimeters.
- Worksheet for students to record and compare their results.
- A safe area where students can jump.
- Pens, pencils, markers etc.
Teaching Aids:
- Projector (optional).
Preparation:
This step has to be done before the session on each workstation/apparatus by the teacher/session instructor:
- Make sure that each computer has Physlogger installed and can detect the Measrelab when connected to it using the provided cable.
- Each Measurelab should have access to a power outlet for sensors that require external power. For this session, we will use the Distance Sensor which needs external power.
- Connect the Distance Sensor to the MeasureLab in the following port:
- Connect the Measurelab to your computer and open the provided session file.
- Your setup will look like this:
Introduction: (10 minutes)
You may begin by saying:
“Who here loves to jump? How high do you think you can jump? Today, we’re going to find out! We’ll use a special tool called MeasureLab to see how high you can jump, and we’ll measure it in centimeters.”
You may ask:
“Have you ever heard of centimeters? They are small units that help us measure how tall or long something is. Let’s take a look at how long a centimeter is!”
- Show a ruler to the class and point out 1 centimeter on the ruler. Let them see how small a centimeter is.
- Ask the students:
How many centimeters do you think you can jump?
You may explain:
“We’re going to measure your jumps in centimeters, just like you measured things with a ruler. Let’s see who can jump the highest!”
Hands-On Exploration (20-25 minutes):
Setting Up the Activity:

Group Setup:
- Students will work in groups.
- Each group will take turns jumping and measuring their jump height using the distance sensor.
- The teacher or a group leader will help set up the distance sensor to track the height of their jumps.

Jump High Challenge:
- One student will jump while the distance sensor measures how high they jumped. The result will be shown on the screen in centimeters.
- After each jump, the student will record their jump height in the worksheet.
You may ask:
- “How high do you think you jumped? Let’s look at the number on the screen—how many centimeters is it?”
- “Can you jump even higher on your next try? Let’s see!”
Classroom Engagement:
- Encourage friendly competition as each group takes turns jumping and recording their heights.
- You may say:
- “Wow, you jumped 50 centimeters! Can you go even higher?”
- “Let’s see who in your group can jump the highest!”
